About the Composer

Michael Olson

Michael Olson grew up in Tarpon Springs (FL) and has been a dedicated musician since his early years. His interest in musical composition led him to develop a robust skill set. Both as a clarinetist and composer, he had his first work performed in high school by the Pinellas County “All-County Symphonic Band.” He thrives on innovation and various musical styles and uses those elements to bring success to his compositions.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Troy University, where he is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Music Education and is a graduate assistant for the Troy University Bands. Michael currently studies composition with Dr. Traci Mendel, his teaching experience has given him the opportunity to work extensively with the students and staff of Tarpon Springs High School, Pike Road Junior High School, Pike Road High School and various ensembles at Troy University.

Michael formerly served as the head Clarinet Section Leader and Woodwind Caption Head for the Troy University “Sound of the South” Marching Band, the Assistant Principal Clarinetist for the Troy University Symphony Band, and an Instructor of Woodwinds for The Tarpon Springs Outdoor Performance Ensemble.

Beyond his instrumental achievements, Michael is a published arranger/composer with Inspire Music and Entertainment Productions, RWS Music, and Michael Olson Music. His works have been showcased at prestigious events like the College Band Directors National Association Conference and performed by distinguished ensembles, including the Troy University Symphony Band (AL), West Salem High School Wind Ensemble (OR), Tarpon Springs Wind Ensemble (FL), The Orlando Contemporary Chamber Orchestra (FL), Brunswick High School Marching Band (GA), Ashley Ridge High School Marching Band (SC), and Gull Lake High School Marching Band (MI). 

Olson’s compositions are celebrated for their artistry and impact on ensembles across the United States. He is a two-time recipient of the Alabama Music Educators Association’s “Young Composer” Award and was labeled as a National Finalist for the American Prize in Composition.
