Program Note: "Blue Eyes" is a musical reflection on my childhood memories with my father. The piece captures the essence of those moments through a mix of musical textures and styles, each representing different facets of our shared experiences.
The opening soundscape sets a contemplative tone, enriched by warm brass lines that evoke a sense of nostalgia. A slower, lyrical fanfare follows, offering a melodic exploration of quiet, meaningful moments. The final section introduces a blend of styles, representing the dynamic and varied nature of life’s memories, before returning to the initial soundscape to bring the journey full circle.

Program Note: Echoes of Valor is a bold and evocative fanfare composed for wind ensemble brass, with a focus on the dynamic brass and percussion sections. Drawing inspiration from the timeless themes of courage, honor, and triumph, this work serves as both a celebration and a reflection on the enduring power of valor.
The piece begins with an energetic and regal fanfare, introducing bold brass fanfares that ring out with pride, paired with rhythmic, propulsive percussion. These opening gestures quickly establish a sense of purpose and strength, as if heralding a momentous occasion or victory. As the composition unfolds, the themes begin to develop, building through contrasting sections of tension and release, creating a sense of progression and momentum.
The brass section takes center stage, with soaring melodic lines and powerful harmonic statements, while the percussion adds layers of intensity and rhythmic complexity. Through their interplay, the fanfare evokes both the struggle and the triumph inherent in the idea of valor—each echoing the past while looking forward with resolve.

Program Note: ¡Wepa! Is a two-movement tribute to the music frequently found around the Caribbean islands such as Salsa, Bomba, Merengue, Calypso, and more. The first movement, Por Favor, tells the story of the girl in a red dress that is heavily sought after. You feel the pull and passion, but naturally, you watch her walk away into the night. The second movement Ya Tú Sabes pays homage to my family heritage from the island of Puerto Rico. The phrase Ya Tú Sabes is a widely used slang term meaning “You Already Know,” or “You Know How I DO.” This movement is a virtuosic celebration encapsulating the very souls of the islands and the spirit of the people of Puerto Rico.

Program Note: Go Silently My Love is a musical representation of coming to terms with saying goodbye to a family member that has memory loss. While you go on with your life you witness a person that you love slowly becoming a shell of the person they once were, slowly forgetting how to function until they cannot function at all. You ask yourself why is this happening? You experience sadness, anger, and depression as you learn to accept this new reality. The clarinet and flute soloist represent the two individuals conversating throughout this new reality as they try to reconcile and find themselves again. Though, these people both become new versions of themselves in the end.

Program Note: Reverberations was the first piece I wrote for wind ensemble back in 2017. Writing this piece paved the way for others of my wind ensemble pieces such as Exuberance and Obsidian Hellfire. I chose to title this piece Reverberations as the main motive bounces across each section of the ensemble, it sounds as if the motive is reverberating. Including the first piece I have ever wrote for wind ensemble in the 2024 Summer Series has been very moving and exciting.

Program Note: Renaissance was one of the first pieces I have ever written for concert band back in 2017. When I was deciding which pieces to include in the “2024 Summer Series,” I had the idea to refinish this piece and include it on my website. The piece maintains a fanfare like style throughout the piece and maintains a sense of heroism. Renaissance provides an opportunity for each section to be featured before closing out the final tutti section.

Program Note: Ya Tú Sabes is a common slang term used frequently throughout multiple Latin – Caribbean countries and territories. This phrase translated to English means “you already know.” I thought this was the perfect title as I started to write this piece as it fits the energetic and lively nature. Ya Tú Sabes features a festive clarinet quartet at the forefront of the piece while accompanied by a percussion ensemble and piano. This piece will transport listeners to the beautiful landscapes and beaches of Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

Starting with the first statement of the dance theme in the solo double bass, the theme quickly gets passed to the percussion ensemble and eventually throughout all sections with different variations. “Obsidian Hellfire” has flares of Latin and Arab influence filled with woodwind flourishes, boisterous brass, and climatic percussion always providing the feeling of HIGHER, FASTER, LOUDER!!

Program Note: The color indigo is one of the most beautifully lush colors in the world, partly due to the color’s rareness in nature. As the color is so unique and rare, so are the emotional connections we make with one another. To me, the color indigo represents reflection, cohesiveness, and a hopeful future. The piece “Indigo” is the story of two individuals sitting in a field under the night sky filled with shining stars and blissful moonlight, reflecting on the past and looking into the future together. It is thought as a part of “New Age Beliefs” that an “Indigo Individual” is a person that may experience emotions more intensely or have a deep connection to their inner selves. Some believe that “Indigo Individuals” may feel a strong sense of empathy, compassion, and desire to make a positive change in the world. This piece is dedicated to Cody Keane, who is the most “Indigo Individual” I know.

Program Note: “Finding Bliss” is a musical telling of a love story between two people. The juxtaposition of two distinct themes represents the journey these two people take. Learning how to let down barriers and properly feel. But one cannot accomplish that without the other.
The first theme is the “heroic theme” and represents the front that person one puts up to seem more confident than what they are. Over time, the theme becomes lusher with the juxtaposition of these two.
Theme two is the “love theme” and represents the softness that person two possesses and tries to break down the walls person one has put up over the years. Will they succeed?

Scoring: 2 Violins, Viola, Cello
Program Note: “String Quartet Number 1” comprises three distinct movements with three different characters and styles. Movement one is an arrangement of my clarinet choir piece titled “Sketches,” except this time the movement is set in C lydian and at time C lydian-mixolydian. The musical result is similar to that of impressionistic artwork. Movement two is much slower and free and allows the musicians to play expressively through various themes. Movement three concludes the piece with a virtuosic showcase of technique heavily anchored in C minor.

Program Note: “NYC” was written in 2019 when I returned home from a summer camp at The Manhattan School of Music. Throughout the writing process, I tried to encapsulate that feeling of the city with all of its twists and turns with an alternating 5/8 and 7/8 time signature pattern. Following the intro, the ensemble opens up with the “NYC” theme, which quickly transitions into the “Nightlife” theme. The piece concludes with a trumpet fanfare, bringing the piece to a climactic closing.
“NYC” went on to win the Pinellas County Music Educators Young Composers Award in 2020.

Program Note: I started writing the original version of this clarinet concerto in the summer of 2019 for a colleague of mine who asked me to write him a piece. The original concerto only consisted of one movement without a title for solo clarinet and piano. I chose to write the entire piece in the key of Bb due to the tempo and the virtuosic flourishes I planned to write. Eventually, I finished writing the concerto and planned to premiere the piece in 2020. Due to the COVID pandemic, the premiere of the piece never happened.
During the summer of the pandemic, I decided to make this piece a real concerto by adding a second and third movement to complete the set. At this time the concerto was still only written for clarinet and piano but now with individual titles representing the character of each of the movements.
Dr. Phillips approached me with the idea of expanding the concerto into a bigger work for clarinet and wind ensemble which prompted the birth of the version we have today. This work went on to win the Alabama Music Educators Association Young Composers Award in 2023.

Program Note: “Exuberance” first started out as the final movement of a piece I wrote in 2018 called “Concerto for Orchestra.” My goal was to create something that was fast, exciting, and over-the-top wild. When I was asked to write a piece for the Tarpon Springs Wind Symphony in 2021, I began transcribing it to a wind ensemble scoring, leading us to the piece we have today. “Exuberance” is an in-your-face concert closer that will surely have the audience and musicians rocking along the whole ride!
