A Trojan Farewell - Celebrating 60 years of “The Sound of the South.”
On Friday, November 21, a truly historic moment took place at Troy University. For the first time ever, the Troy University Symphony Band and the Sound of the South Marching Band came together in a joint performance—uniting two of the University’s most cherished musical ensembles—to premiere my newest piece, A Trojan Farewell.
Composed in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Sound of the South, this work represents both a tribute and a reflection. When writing A Trojan Farewell, I wanted to honor the generations of students, directors, and supporters who built the legacy we proudly continue today. To do that, I drew inspiration from familiar Troy University melodies—songs that have echoed across campus, football fields, and concert halls for decades—and reframed them in a new musical light. The piece blends nostalgia with renewal, symbolizing how tradition and innovation walk hand in hand at Troy.
Seeing the Symphony Band and Sound of the South share the stage to bring this vision to life was an experience I will never forget. Their combined energy, dedication, and musicianship elevated the work beyond anything I imagined.
Thank you to every student, director, staff member, and supporter who helped make this production possible. Your passion is what keeps the Trojan spirit alive.
I invite you to listen to the performance below—
